Our History

1954

The Liverpool Magic Circle was established in August 1954, marking a significant moment in the history of magic.

 At that time, another magic club in Liverpool, known as the Mahatma Circle of Magicians, existed. It is believed that some members of the Mahatma Circle left for various reasons to form the Liverpool Magic Circle. This new club primarily attracted a younger generation of magicians, while the Mahatma Circle represented the older generation.

1966

On January 1, 1966, the Liverpool Magic Circle amalgamated with the Mahatma Circle of Magicians, resulting in the formation of the Mahatma Magic Circle.

2003

In 2003, some very enthusiastic members of the Mahatma wanted to meet more regularly than just once a month. This initiative attracted numerous other magicians from Liverpool and beyond, especially from the younger generation, who were eager to participate.

2004

People began to inquire about the name of this new magic club and how they could apply to join. Little did we know that like a phoenix rising from the ashes, a transformation was about to occur! Three members of Mahatma—Les Jones, Richie Smith, and Alan Singleton—listened to the interest of these magicians and decided to REFORM the Liverpool Magic Circle. 

It felt like history was repeating itself.

On February 22, 2004, the Liverpool Magic Circle held its inaugural meeting in the room above the Crown Pub in West Derby. We initially met fortnightly for the first four years before transitioning to one official meeting a month, with an additional unofficial gathering that suited everyone.

At the inaugural meeting, members received a membership card and a badge, as is customary today. The first 25 members were honored with a special silver badge as founding members, and no, they won’t sell it for cash! To join, candidates had to pass an interview or audition before the council and perform.

Over the years, the Liverpool Magic Circle has flourished. Many of our members have become honorary members, including notable figures such as Franz Harary, Jay Scott Berry, Geoff Ray, Ken Dodd, and Paul Zenon, among others. You might recognize some of these names!

Additionally, we have hosted esteemed guest lecturers and magicians like Colombini, Michael Ammar, Daryl, Jay Scott Berry, Bobby Bernard, Pat Page, Gazzo, Chris Congreave, Gary Jones, Andrew Normansell, Bob Ostin, Doc Eason, Jay Sankey, Jon Allen, Nick Einhorn, Etienne Pradier, Michael Vincent, Ben Earl, and many more.

The Liverpool Magic Circle has organized numerous fabulous dinner shows, raising thousands of pounds for charity. These events have featured amazing local and celebrity acts, including Acer Murphy, Sean Styles, Lord Charles, Ray Allen, Paul Daniels, and The Grumbleweeds, to name a few. We take pride in having raised enough money to purchase a Variety Sunshine Bus for a local school.

We have also held dealer days where magicians could buy, sell, and trade their magic. Club members have hosted and won many industry magic competitions, showcasing their talents. We even produced our very own magazine, published monthly, and some members have gone on to achieve great success.

Steve Williams is now a professional entertainer working for A-class celebrities as an advisor and PA.

Dave Hooper is a Master of Card Sleights, and is creator of Magic in his own right selling numerous tricks to the magic market. Dave has produced his own DVD 'The Force of Will.' Look it up! 

Richie Smith is a world Guinness record holder for the longest magic show, a title he has held for 20 years!
